What should I use for bedding and lining the base of the house?
Most types of litter you find in your local pet shop are good for your pet rats and these include materials like: shredded paper, aspen shavings, cornhusk and most cat litter substances. It is important to keep away from softwood shavings like pine and cedar shavings as the phenols that come from them can seriously harm the rats liver and respiratory functions.
Cardboard boxes can also be used in the cage and rats find them very interesting and can spend many a hour shredding the boxes or simply making windows to climb into the box and fall asleep!
