What should I feed my rat?
Rats generally speaking will eat anything you give them but be careful as they do not understand what is good for their health and what isn’t good.
A good starter is basic rat food from your local pet store, supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Studies have shown a high protein intake can reduce their lifespan and your rats can develop protein sores if over 25% of their diet.
Studies have also shown foods like raw beans, household plant leafs (including tomato leafs) and too many sweets/ candies are not good for their health.
Most importantly a rat needs a fresh supply of water; a gravity drip-feed bottle is highly recommended and can be bought quite cheaply from a local pet store.
The best advice when looking to buying rat food is to speak to a specialist or look on rat forums (see the useful links page for examples of) where experienced rat keepers can advice.
