Why do ‘rats’ make good pets?

Rats are very good for pets as they are easy to bond with humans, do not require lots of space (therefore apartments are ideal, where dogs are not). They offer much in the way of affection and can be very entertaining. A common misunderstanding with fancyrats is they belong outside although the truth is they are a house pet and do not like changes in the climate.

It is important to interact with your rats as regularly as possible and a run outside the cage is also a necessity. One thing to be aware is occasional urination when they wander outside the cage, the smell and damage is nothing like what you expect from most other household pets.

Like other rodents they have a tendency to gnaw objects but this is notably less than other rodents.

Feeding your rats is generally inexpensive and basic rat food can be supplemented with leftovers from your mealtimes! It is not recommended to feed your rats acidic foods like lemons and grapefruit. My fancyrats enjoy dry pasta for a treat although it does sound like a drill whilst they are eating away!
